Nominations are determined by votes of
over 5,700 film professionals, and usually five are chosen to
present to the public. Winners are chosen through polling
the readers of FilmFare magazine and a select panel of
professionals, with equal weight given to both groups. In
all, the night remains a celebration of all the past year's
great films and performances, though there is much controversy
that deems the awards biased and therefore meaningless.
History
Based on a compilation of 20,000 votes
from readers throughout India, the first FilmFare awards was
held on March 21, 1954. Originally named "Clares" to honor
a prominent film critic who had passed away that same year,
FilmFare began as a way to propel the Indian film industry
forward through competition and additional media.
Interesting Trivia
- Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,
with a total of ten awards, holds the record for the film
that has won the most awards.
- Raj Kapoor has never refused
an invitation to the awards ceremony, even if his films are
not included in the list of nominees.
- Kamal Haasan holds the honor
of having won the most FilmFare Awards. He currently
has sixteen trophies.
- Alka Yagnik stole the category
'Best Female Playback Singer' when her songs covered all
five nominations in the category. Needless to say, she
walked away a winner.
